Abstract
"North by East" piece on the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's annual fish-stocking program. This spring more than a million young fish are being released into some 700 bodies of water around the state. The large number is due in part to a new program that lets the hatcheries concentrate on raising more fish by accepting help from private enterprise. The private sponsor helps with needed repairs and maintenance, preventing a drop in the number of fish raised. The department stocks five different species each year--landlocked salmon; brook, brown, and lake trout; and splake, a cross between brook and lake trout.
