Abstract

"North by East" piece on an unnamed northern Maine librarian who discovered that he had one of two existing silver dollars minted in 1866 without the phrase "In God We Trust," and valued as high as $6 million. He acquired the coin, stolen in 1967 from the Florida estate of Willis Du Pont, as collateral on a loan he made to a book and coin collector in California. He contacted American Numismatic Rarities in Wolfeboro, N.H., which was offering the other coin for auction, because he wants to return the coin to its rightful owner.
