Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on Nelson Daigle, 66, of Millinocket, who has climbed Mount Katahdin 265 times in the past 10 years, 45 times since last summer alone. Over the years, he has helped with mountain rescues and is surprised by some hikers' lack of preparedness. As more hikers attempt the climb, the Baxter Park Authority is beginning a new evaluation of the human impact on the mountain and is also considering requiring compensation from hikers who get themselves into unnecessary trouble.
