Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on Maine methadone clinics, five in total, that treat opiate-addicted Mainers. Supporters say Maine needs more clinics, but opponents, like those in Rockland and Bangor, have worked to thwart clinics in those cities. Ten years ago, before the arrival of the prescription painkiller OxyContin and cheap heroin, Maine had too few opiate addicts to support more than one clinic. Methadone's potential for misuse, including overdose deaths, generates most of the opposition to clinics among law enforcement. The relapse rate for opiate addicts is 70 to 90 percent, and many must take methadone for the rest of their lives.
