    Abstract

"North by East" piece on how Maine students follow a school calendar that is rarely observed outside New England. Students take courses well into June but also have two weeklong vacations in Feb. and April. The Feb. vacation is entrenched as the time for the basketball tournament, and the April break was traditionally during "mud season," when buses would get mired in muck. Trying to change the schedule has always aroused opposition from parents, unions, and business interests.
