Abstract
An in-depth article on development on Portland's East End, sparked by Ocean Gateway, a cruise ship and ferry terminal that is now in progress. Plans are in the works for the Longfellow Condominiums and Parking Garage; the Westin Portland Hotel and residences; and the Village at Ocean Gate. Three separate developers--Riverwalk LLC (Longfellow Condominiums), Michael Liberty (the Westin), and GFI of Boston (the Village)--plan to build a total of 423 mostly high-end condominiums; a 230-room hotel; and multiple parking facilities. The development is generally consistent with the Portland City Council's Waterfront East Development Plan, adopted in 2004. With details on the projects and on the mixed but mostly favorable reaction from residents.
