Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the immigrant worker situation in Maine. It is estimated that up to 12,000 migrant farmworkers and their families work in Maine Most are Hispanic and more than half are undocumented. Both Maine and Portland have policies prohibiting official inquiries about immigration status unless pertinent to an investigation. Maine's Migrant Health Program, begun in 1991, operates without regard to immigration status. Farmers, factory owners, wreath makers, and others say migrant workers are vital to their businesses. It is estimated that 4,000 Hispanics live in Portland. Hispanics make up 10 percent of the population in Milbridge, thanks to jobs created by Cherry Point Producers.
