Abstract

A collection of five brief articles, each exploring a unique way to enjoy winter in Maine. "Ice Maidens" delves into Cold Tits, Warm Hearts, a swimming club that enjoys the waters of Mount Desert Island in all seasons, including the frigid ones. "Uphill Battlers" tells the story of Zachary McCarthy, who introduces newcomers to his favorite sport of ski touring - which involves hiking up mountains before skiing down them again - through his organization Inclusive Ski Touring. "Wetsuit Wonders" explores More Women + Surf, an organization that aims to make surfing - including winter surfing - more accessible to women and others underrepresented in the sport. "Wind Catchers" discusses the sport of wing sailing - where a skate- or ski- wearing participant glides over ice propelled by a handheld sail. Finally, "Goody Two-Shoes" profiles runner Jennifer Britz and her love of snowshoe racing.
