Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on two bills introduced to expand broadband access. Supporters of the bills say the lack of high-speed access hurts Maine competitiveness. Sen. Lynn Bromley (D-South Portland) is proposing a study to determine if municipalities could act as Internet service providers. Rep. Hannah Pingree (D-North Haven) seeks to create the Maine Broadband Advisory Council to develop strategies to bring broadband to rural areas. The bill would also expand the regulatory authority of the Public Utilities Commission. Verizon and other phone companies dispute the idea that the state can regulate Internet access.
