Abstract
The market is growing for clinical research organizations (CROs) like Gail Baillargeon's Bangor-based Acadia Clinical Research. Drug companies are outsourcing more clinical trials to hospitals and smaller firms, a move precipitated by the Food and Drug Administration's increased oversight. Maine Medical Center in Portland plans to double the capacity of its Research Institute over the next five years. Although researchers aren't handsomely compensated by drug companies, doing the research is a way of bringing cutting-edge treatments to local patients.
