Abstract
"Focus on Building & Real Estate" piece on a former municipal landfill in Wells that the town purchased with the houses on it, because of environmental concerns. Under the Solid Waste Landfill Closure and Remediation Program, started in 1988, the Department of Environmental Protection was able to close 388 landfills, but many older and hard to identify landfills went untouched. In Wells, residents in the Abenaki Trail subdivision first grew concerned about water quality reports. Further testing showed soil contamination. The town spent the equivalent of a year's tax revenues to buy the residents out. Details.
