Abstract
"Focus on Energy & Utilities" piece on the New England Power Pool, formed in 1971 and administered by Independent System Operator (ISO) New England. Although Maine generates more electricity than it needs, ratepayers here will subsidize power plant construction in Connecticut and Massachusetts by more than $300 million. In an interview, Sharon Reishus, a commissioner of the Maine Public Utilities Commission (PUC), discusses how Maine might pull out of the regional pool, possibly joining with maritime Canada or creating a standalone entity. In June, the PUC launched an investigation to explore alternatives to membership in the New England Power Pool.
