Abstract
"Focus: Banking & Finance" piece on the New American Education Center in Portland, where founder Judy Carl teaches refugees and immigrants language skills and cultural awareness, along with financial literacy. Many immigrants, especially those from East and Central Africa, have lived in a cash-based society where the thought of a trusted banking system is unimaginable. Through a partnership with Sandy Walsh, manager of KeyBank's Monument Square branch in Portland, students are taught about trust, the importance of saving money, and how banks can keep a person's money safe. With comments by program participants Yussuf Yussuf, a Somali refugee; and Louis Okeika, a Sudanese refugee.
