Abstract
"Focus on Northern Maine" piece four years after the bankruptcy of Great Northern Paper Co. A local fight over whether Millinocket should diversify with tourism or manufacturing jobs might be scaring away new business. The Millinocket Area Growth and Investment Council (MAGIC) applied with the Wilderness Society to create a business park powered by a wood-fired biomass boiler. Locals, who saw the Washington, D.C.-based society as being against forest-based industry, felt threatened and cut MAGIC's funding in half.
