Abstract
"Focus on Western Maine" piece on Scott Christiansen, 46, whose failed dream to create a biomas industry and a $45-million biorefinery in western Maine prompted him to step down as executive director of the Fractionation Development Center, a Rumford nonprofit that was his brainchild. He believes Maine should still capitalize on biofuel, but says inaccurate profit projections, a wood-to-biofuel technique called pyrolysis that was not yet commercially viable, and legislative refusal of $700,000 in state funding combined to make the project unviable.
