Abstract
The high cost of health care in Maine (27% higher than the national average) is the major factor driving two competing proposals that will determine the fate of Parkview Adventist Medical Center in Brunswick. The proposal put forth by Lewiston-based Central Maine Healthcare and Parkview would, its proponents argue, preserve choice for its patients. Brunswick's other hospital, Mid Coast Hospital, proposes a completely different approach to the health care dilemma. Their vision of a coordinated preventive health care system for the area would close down Parkview. Mary Mayhew, commissioner of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, will use the state's Certificate of Need process to guide her decision-making.
