Abstract

“Focus Education/Workforce” piece is an examination of how three different industries are tackling their own workforce training needs. Bath Iron Works, looking to hire about 500 employees to work on the five Navy destroyers under construction, opened a Trades Learning Center within the shipyard. The Maine Ocean & Wind Industry Initiative wants Maine to be ready for the jobs that the Cape Wind project will likely create as well as other opportunities if offshore wind farms are constructed in the Gulf of Maine. The forest products industry, which is facing a need for greater entry-level training and an aging workforce, has developed intensive seminars to teach best practices.
