Abstract

"Capitolism." Until 1876, only an act of the legislature could grant a corporate charter in Maine, but after that time American law changed, significantly reducing shareholder liability. Carolyn Chute's recent proposal to revoke corporate charters would have little effect, since the large corporations she fears could simply register elsewhere and continue to do business in Maine.
