Abstract

Eileen Shanahan, Washington bureau chief for the St. Petersburg Times, is the 1993 recipient of the Elijah Parish Lovejoy award at Colby College. The award is named for the Colby graduate who died November 7, 1837, trying to defend his abolitionist press from a pro-slavery mob in Alton, Ill.
