Abstract

The urchin harvest in Maine has grown from virtually nothing eight years ago into the state's second most-valuable fishery, behind only lobsters. But the industry is experiencing growing pains, and the past year has seen the death of four divers and an increase in the harvesting of urchins with a very low roe content. The urchin industry benefits thousands of people, from the divers themselves to shippers, dive suppliers and boat maintenance people, and many see the need for regulations to ensure the industry's future.
