Abstract

The urchin harvest nearly tripled between 1989 and 1992, from 9.4 million to 26.5 million pounds, and this year's harvest could total between 30 and 40 million pounds. Biologists and many in the industry believe that if the pace of harvesting continues we could see the total demise of the valuable resource, and if the urchins disappear the industry and the thousands of jobs it supports will disappear with them.
