Abstract

Conflicting economic data complicates attempts to make accurate budget predictions for the state. State budget officials look optimistically at state tax collections for the first quarter, which ended October 31, and see a surplus over projections of $15 million. The Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission, however, is pessimistic because its data shows that the state has lost as many jobs in the first seven months of 1993 as it gained during the whole of 1992. Fewer jobs mean lower tax collections in the future.
