Abstract

Scientists and graduate students at the University of Maine at Orono's food science laboratory are testing genetically engineered fruits and vegetables for pesticide residue and toxicity levels. Professor Rodney Bushway's toxicity trials on Calgene Inc.'s "Flavr Savr" tomato were part of five years' worth of experiments conducted to assess the safety and nutrition of the tomato.
