Abstract

Ilya and Irena Shapiro and their 12-year-old daughter Anna, immigrants from Odessa, Ukraine, last week helped light the menorah on the steps of Portland City Hall to mark the beginning of Hanukkah. The Shapiros were never able to publicly observe the Jewish holidays in their homeland, though they sometimes gathered in small groups or held religious ceremonies in the privacy of their own homes.
