Abstract

A coalition of labor unions and political activists held press conferences throughout New England on Wednesday to call attention to the fact that the region should receive the same level of federal assistance in dealing with defense-related job losses as California. President Clinton has assigned Commerce Secretary Ron Brown to coordinate federal defense conversion programs in California, but has not made a similar commitment to New England, which has 23 percent more defense-dependent jobs than California.
