Abstract

Gov. McKernan yesterday revealed plans to fund the training of teachers in a tutoring method called Reading Recovery. McKernan has requested $2 million from the Legislature to train teachers in the method, the ultimate goal is to have 500 Reading Recovery teachers in the state and a guarantee that by the spring of 1997 every Maine child completing first grade will be able to read at or above grade level.
