Abstract

Brian Beal, a biologist and shellfish expert at the University of Maine at Machias, is calling for a state study of the clam industry in Hancock and Washington counties. The softshell clam harvest in those two counties decreased from 4.6 million pounds in 1982 to 500,000 pounds in 1992, and Beal says the state needs to take action to determine why the industry experienced such a downturn.
