Abstract

Because of seven diving-related deaths in the past 18 months, state legislators are considering a bill that would require scallop and urchin divers to be certified by specified dive shops and instructors. Uncertified divers would be barred from harvesting urchins and scallops. Urchins are the second largest fishery in Maine, and there are currently 2,000 licensed scallop and sea urchin divers in the state. Brief details.
