Abstract

Although Portland's crime rate resumed a downward trend in 1992, dropping to a level 12 percent lower than in 1987, it still remained well above the average rate for cities of similar size throughout the country, as well as the rates for the state and the nation as a whole -- Portland's overall crime rate of 11475 crimes per 1,000 residents compared to a rate of 6084 per 1,000 residents in Bangor and 5707 per 1,000 residents in Lewiston -- Details
