Abstract

State officials have temporarily closed clamming beds from the western side of Penobscot Bay to the New Hampshire border in response to an anticipated decline in water quality due to recent heavy rain and snow. Heavy rains lead to storm runoff carrying wastes that have accumulated in yards and streets, a problem exacerbated in the spring because the waste has had all winter to build up.
