Abstract

The Maine Civil Liberties Union has asked the Biddeford School Board to explain its reasons for prohibiting the wearing of hats inside the school. The inquiry was made at the request of students Caroline Scott and Karen Gosselin. Seth Berner of the MCLU said that student dress can be part of constitutionally protected expression, and cited a 1969 U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the rights of students in Iowa.
