Abstract

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court yesterday ruled against the heirs of Elizabeth Beasom Stephan, who died in 1976 and bequeathed an 18th century painting, "the Phyllis," to the New England Society for the Preservation of Antiquities. The heirs had claimed that Stephan's stipulation that the painting remain in the Society's Parson Smith House in Windham was violated when the Society closed the Smith House and moved the painting to the Hamilton House in South Berwick.
