Abstract

There are approximately 4,000 miles of unpaved roads in the state, and they are spread throughout 95 percent of Maine's 492 towns. During the mid-March to late-April stretch known as mud season, some curse the nearly impassable roads, but others defend them for slowing traffic and preserving the rural nature of the state.
