Abstract

The Atlantic salmon, which once thrived in streams from Nova Scotia to southern New England, has had its populations decimated so badly that the fish is being considered for protection under the Endangered Species Act. The Maine Legislature in 1947 established the Atlantic Sea Run Salmon Commission, charged with research, planning, management, restoration and propagation of the fish. A new law allows fishermen to keep only one salmon under 25 inches and mandates the release of salmon over 25 inches. Details, related article.
