Analysis of changes in academic programs proposed last week by University of Southern Maine President Richard L. Pattenaude. The university is trying to cope with a large drop in enrollment, and Pattenaude's proposals show a shift toward subjects that prepare students for specific jobs, at the expense of more traditional disciplines.
