Abstract

Sen. George J. Mitchell is opposed to a proposal that would delay the closing of additional military bases. He believes that such a delay would provide other shipyards the chance to acquire the same submarine-overhauling experience and equipment as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, putting the local yard at greater risk of being closed during the next round of base cuts. Mitchell is at odds with Rep. Olympia J. Snowe, who plans to cosponsor the proposal, which is being put forward by Rep. James Hansen, D-Utah.
