Abstract

First in a four-week series on Maine's forests and forest products. Maine is the nation's most heavily forested state, and the state's forests contribute $5 billion annually to the economy. The mountains of hemlock on Portland's waterfront awaiting shipment to China and Turkey are evidence of a growing demand for the state's unfinished lumber. The poor condition of Maine's forest and its inadequate port facilities may mean the state will not be in a position to satisfy the international demand for its lumber and lumber products.
