Abstract

The Maine Department of Transportation, in an attempt to attract more women to the construction business, plans to offer child care for workers building the $165 million Portland-South Portland Bridge. A proposal to locate the child-care center on the grounds of the First Baptist Church on Sawyer Street in South Portland met opposition Wednesday night from residents of the neighborhood around the church, who expressed concern about an increase in traffic due to the center. The bridge project will be the first in the country to offer child care for its workers. Details.
