Abstract

The Maine Department of Transportation, which owns the right of way on the rail bed along the base of the Eastern Promenade, is insisting that any track that is laid along the railway use standard ties measuring 8 feet 6 inches. The Portland Planning Board last month gave approval to the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum to run a train along the rail bed, provided that the track is mounted on 5-foot ties. The state wants the longer ties in case commercial rail service returns to the corridor. Details.
