Abstract

Second in a four-week series on Maine's forests and forest products. Forests cover more than 17 million of the state's 19 million acres of land, and forest-related industries and recreation support 12 percent of the state's jobs, 11 percent of its total payroll and 43 percent of the value of all manufactured goods produced in the state. Around 3.1 million cords of pulpwood were harvested in 1992 to make paper, and some 2.5 million cords were cut for lumber and wood products. The annual timber harvest represents between 2 and 3 percent of the total marketable inventory of wood. Details, related article.
