Abstract

The board of trustees of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences has decided against a proposed merger with the University of Maine at Orono's marine sciences program, which would have required the lab to relocate to the university's Darling Marine Center in Walpole. The lab may still form an alliance with the University of New England. Bigelow has been experiencing financial difficulties since 1991, when the state eliminated its $100,000 contribution to the lab's operating budget. Details.
