Abstract

The National Education Commission on Time and Learning was convened by Congress to study the school calendar and the amount of time students spend learning. The Commission recently put out a report that recommends reinventing school around learning instead of time and devoting a minimum number of hours to core academic instruction. The finding that students need to learn for longer periods through the day and continuously through the year reinforces a proposal by the Yarmouth school district to switch to a year-round calendar. An outcry by students, teachers and parents scuttled that idea. Details.
