Abstract
Amvets Post 25 applied to the Portland City Council about 18 months ago for permission to build a memorial on Eastern Promenade honoring Portland Medal of Honor winner Charles J. Loring but still has not gotten a decision. The request is being reviewed by five boards, including the city council. Some of the more than 40 people reviewing the request object to the memorial because they don't want to glorify war, because they think the proposed design looks like a public restroom, or because they believe that Loring his been sufficiently honored by having a ball park, a highway, an airbase, and other things named after him. Nonetheless, proponents are patiently awaiting a decision by city authorities.
