Abstract

The trustees of the University of New England in Biddeford yesterday voted to form an alliance with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. The agreement, which does not constitute a merger, provides for an internship program at Bigelow and a new funding arrangement for the financially troubled laboratory. Under the five-agreement with UNE, the laboratory will remain independent and will remain in West Boothbay. Bigelow officials recently rejected a merger with the University of Maine at Orono that would have required that the lab move to the Orono campus or the university's Darling Marine Center in Walpole.
