Abstract

Female police officers in Maine say they have experienced sex discrimination and harassment on the job. A common complaint is that they get passed over for work assignments. South Portland police chief Robert M. Schwartz and two of his top-ranking officers were recently disciplined for discriminating against a detective because she was a woman. One factor in the discrimination is the fact that law enforcement in Maine is only 4 percent female, with 86 females officers statewide, as compared to to 8.1 percent nationally. Details.
