Abstract

The Portland City Council last night voted 8-1 to adopt a plan aimed at preserving Deering Oaks park, and agreed to set aside $200,000 annually over the next decade to pay for the work. The plan is expected to cost $2.4 million over the first five years, and involves narrowing roads, renovating the concession building, constructing a pedestrian plaza and improving the basketball and tennis courts. The council also endorsed a plan called "Green Spaces, Blue Edges," and made it city policy to preserve open space, provide more recreational outlets and protect the environment. Details.
