Abstract

The number of unwed parents in Maine seeking custody of children increased from 1,300 a year to 1,600 last year, with the rise attributed in large part to the state's crackdown on people who fail to pay child support. Private verbal agreements between unmarried parents have no legal merit in the state, and fathers who face paying child support are increasingly seeking to establish legal rights to their children.
