Abstract

A jury yesterday awarded Charlotte Warner, 46, of Portland, $32,000 for physical and mental injuries caused by Robert S. Niss, 44, of Gray, when he beat her during a brutal assault in 1990. The suit is believed to be one of the first civil cases in Maine in which the victim of domestic violence has been compensated for emotional pain. Niss in January pleaded guilty in Portland District Court to assault charges stemming from an attack on another woman on January 25, 1993.
