Abstract

The Marriott Corp., which holds a monopoly on restaurants along the Maine Turnpike, is concerned that the hotel complex planned for the former Exit 5 in Saco will take away business from Marriott-controlled fast-food restaurants at Exit 3 in Kennebunk. Technically, Marriott does not have any control over the proposed hotel complex, since it will be on city-owned land, but developer Robert S. Smith of Portland is working with Marriott, the city of Saco and the Maine Turnpike so a lawsuit can be avoided.
