Abstract

A long article detailing the decline in the number of alewives caught in recent years. The emotional impact of the decline is told from the point of view of Mary Mulligan Buchan, who runs the last alewive smokehouse in the Damariscotta Lake region. This might be the first May in 150 years that her family hasn't smoked the fish. Maine lobstermen feel an economic impact as they purchase more-expensive, less-desirable bait to replace the scarce alewives.
